There’s no doubt that the fish oil quality is rapidly decreasing, especially as this supplement becomes more popular. Here are the three main things you need to know when selecting an oil.
As they increase in popularity, more companies jump on the bandwagon simply to make a profit, and the result is poor fish oil quality, often containing traces of toxins too.
Look for the following and you will be able to enjoy the maximum health benefits without the risk.
It stands to reason that the purer the oil, the more benefits it will offer. But how can you tell?
Look for oils that are molecularly distilled because this process separates out the toxins from the oil by weight and enriches the oils further in the precious omega 3 fats.
Most companies avoid this as it is expensive and time-consuming, in order to increase profits but put your health at risk as you may unwittingly ingest traces of mercury, dioxins and PCBs.
The company from New Zealand that I use also puts their oil through another purifying process which leaves it totally pure and free from all traces of toxins.
If you pierce a soft gel, you can check for the fish oil quality yourself!
What you want is a faint ocean smell, not a strong fishy one as this means the oil is rancid and will offer extremely limited benefits, if any.
Many companies use disguises like enteric coatings, flavoring and coloring on their stale oils, all of which are unnecessary.
#3 Omega 3 Content
What you should expect is at least 50% omega 3 fats in your fish oil. Many contain a lot less so check the label or website with care.
There are two main Omega 3 fats – DHA and EPA, but while most have more EPA as it’s cheaper to use, the DHA fats provide most of the health benefits to you.
DHA fats help to give the oils their powerful anti-inflammatory qualities and are essential for your brain and mental health too, making up 97% of the omega 3 fats in your brain.
Look for at least 250-300mg of DHA in each standard 1000mg soft gel.
As you can see, it pays to know what to look for when assessing fish oil quality. If you follow these tips you can get the highest quality oil and the maximum health benefits too.
