The gray matter of the brain is mostly fat. Most of the fatty acids in the brain are DHA or Docosahexaenoic acids. DHA is the longest of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids.
DHA is needed to build new brain cells. When brain cells become damaged, they must be replaced. When new things are learned or new memories are created, new pathways are formed and new cells are built to house the memories. DHA is needed for that construction.
EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid is another of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids. Without EPA, the brain does not function properly.
• Low blood levels of EPA and DHA are associated with an increased risk of depression and suicidal behavior
• Supplements containing DHA and EPA have proven benefits for attention deficit disorders

Decades ago, when infant formulas were first introduced, scientists believed that the omega-6s were more important than the omega 3s. The belief was based on animal studies, which showed that omega-6s were necessary for normal growth and “better” at supporting skin and kidney function.
It took years of research to learn that omega 3s were just as important as the omega-6s. In some ways, they are more important. A growing body of evidence supports the conclusion that the need for omega-6s in the diet has been “largely over-estimated”.
Omega-6s contribute to inflammation in much the same way as saturated fats. Inflammation plays a role in heart disease, cancer, asthma, allergies, arthritis and many other diseases.
Omega 3s can be converted to inflammatory molecules. Inflammation is a necessary function of the immune system. But, when inflammation becomes chronic, it causes disease.
The molecules created from omega 3s are far less inflammatory than those made from omega-6s. In addition, the omega 3s trigger the production of anti-inflammatory compounds. They tell the body that inflammation is no longer necessary.
Evaluations of dietary habits in the US have shown that some people consume 40 times more omega-6s than omega 3s. Ideally, we would consume the same amount of each.
