The Health Benefits of Omega 3 Supplementation

According to scientific research, omega 3 supplementation benefits every system of the body in some way. The biggest benefits are to the brain and the heart.

Where other fats contribute to heart disease by clogging the arteries, omega 3 fats fight heart disease in several ways. Here’s what they do for your heart.

•    Anti-coagulant activity–they prevent the formation of blood clots

•    Antioxidant activity–they prevent the oxidation of fats in the bloodstream. When fats become oxidized, they can adhere to the walls of the arteries and harden atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is caused by oxidized fat

•    Relax smooth muscles–this effect reduces blood pressure slightly, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke

•    Improves cholesterol levels–not all cholesterol is bad. Most people with cholesterol problems have LDL levels that are too high and HDL levels that are too low. LDL particles are more likely to adhere to the arterial walls and form clots. HDL helps to remove LDL particles from the bloodstream. Omega 3 fish oil supplementation has been shown to increase HDL levels

•    Lowers total blood triglycerides–triglycerides are fats in the bloodstream. The more fats in your blood, the greater your risk of heart disease, blood clots and stroke. The prescription drug LOVAX for very high triglycerides is actually nothing more than omega 3 fish oil

•    Anti-inflammatory activity–when oxidized fats stick to the walls of the arteries, they cause inflammation or swelling, which narrows the arteries even further

For Your Brain

The gray matter of the brain is mostly fat. Most of the fatty acids in the brain are DHAs or Docosahexaenoic acids. DHA is the longest of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids.

DHA is needed to build new brain cells. When brain cells become damaged, they must be replaced. When new things are learned or new memories are created, new pathways are formed and new cells are built to house the memories. DHA is needed for that construction.

EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid is another of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids. Without EPA, the brain does not function properly.

•    Low blood levels of EPA and DHA are associated with an increased risk of depression and suicidal behavior

•    Supplements containing DHA and EPA have proven benefits for attention deficit disorders

•    EPA supplements have been shown to promote the growth of gray and white matter in patients with schizophrenia and Huntington’s disease

•    Supplements containing EPA and DHA reduce the risk of relapse in bipolar patients

•    Post-partum depression may be caused by a lack of DHA in the bloodstream, as much of the mother’s stores are diverted to the developing baby during the final months of pregnancy

•    DHA is absolutely essential for fetal brain development

Fish oils for brain healthYou may have seen television commercials promoting new baby food and infant formulas that are fortified with DHA and/or EPA. The omega 3s are essential for normal brain development in childhood.

DHA and EPA are found in human breast milk, but not in cow’s milk or soy-based infant formulas. For decades, researchers have known that breast-fed babies seemed to do better in school. They were less likely to suffer from allergies and asthma. They were healthier overall.

There were many theories about the difference between breast-fed and formula-fed babies. Today, doctors agree that the difference has to do with the fatty acid content. Let me explain a little bit about the different dietary fats.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Fact: “The human brain is comprised of 60% fats, and approximately half of that fat is DHA omega 3.”

Not all fats are the same!

The foods you eat may contain saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated or trans-fatty acids. Trans-fatty acids are man-made. Any partially hydrogenated oil is a source of trans-fats.

They are not essential to the human diet. In fact, they are bad for your health. Trans-fats contribute to heart disease and chronic inflammation.

Most meats and dairy products contain a combination of saturated and unsaturated fats. Beef, pork and dairy products contain more saturated fats. Nuts, olives and fish contain more unsaturated fats.

A healthy diet consists of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. All are needed for the body to function normally.

Only the polyunsaturated omega-6s and omega 3s are essential to the human diet. Essential nutrients are those that must be present in order to avoid suffering from deficiency diseases.

Decades ago, when infant formulas were first introduced, scientists believed that the omega-6s were more important than the omega 3s. The belief was based on animal studies, which showed that omega-6s were necessary for normal growth and “better” at supporting skin and kidney function.

It took years of research to learn that omega 3s were just as important as the omega-6s. In some ways, they are more important. A growing body of evidence supports the conclusion that the need for omega-6s in the diet has been “largely over-estimated”.

Omega-6s contribute to inflammation in much the same way as saturated fats. Inflammation plays a role in heart disease, cancer, asthma, allergies, arthritis and many other diseases.

Omega 3s can be converted to inflammatory molecules. Inflammation is a necessary function of the immune system. But, when inflammation becomes chronic, it causes disease.

The molecules created from omega 3s are far less inflammatory than those made from omega-6s. In addition, the omega 3s trigger the production of anti-inflammatory compounds. They tell the body that inflammation is no longer necessary.

Evaluations of dietary habits in the US have shown that some people consume 40 times more omega-6s than omega 3s. Ideally, we would consume the same amount of each.

Any increase in omega 3 intake can improve your health. Reducing your intake of omega-6s could help even more. Taking a fish oil supplement is an easy and inexpensive way to increase your omega 3 intake.

Supplementation will almost certainly improve your current health and reduce your risk of life-threatening health problems as you age, as long as you choose a good brand.

Fish oils from New ZealandHow to Select the Best Fish Oil

Liquids, Tablets, Capsules and Enteric Coatings

There are liquids, tablets and capsules. The liquids have a shorter shelf-life. They are more likely to become rancid. Rancid oils are bad for your health because they contain free radicals.

Taking the correct amount is important. Getting an exact dosage with a liquid supplement is difficult, if not impossible. Besides, the liquids taste bad and smell terrible.

In order to make tablets out of oil, the manufacturer must mix the oils with additives and basically cook them. This reduces the nutritional value and increases the risk of oxidation.

Capsules are by far the best choice. The shelf life is long. The dosage is accurate. They are tasteless, odorless and easy to swallow.

An enteric coating is not necessary for a high quality fish oil supplement. The nutrients should be released in the stomach. The coating would cause them to be released in the upper intestine. An enteric coating would also increase the price.

Safety, Purity and Freshness

Generally speaking, fish oil supplements are safe for everyone as long as the dosage is reasonable. The only concern has been an increased bleeding risk for hemophiliacs and people taking anti-coagulant drugs.

If you have a health problem or you are currently taking prescription drugs, you should talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any dietary supplements you are taking.

Research has been conducted concerning maximum dosages. The recommendations vary. The best advice is to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation. Be careful not to exceed the recommended daily dose unless your physician advises you to do so.

Purity

The purity of a supplement has to do with contaminants. The risk of mercury and PCB contamination is high. The risk can be very high if the fish swim in contaminated waters.

The areas with the highest contamination levels include most of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Chesapeake Bay, the waters around Northern Europe and China. These are areas that have been industrialized for many years.

The waters surrounding New Zealand are some of the cleanest on the planet. Industrialization is mostly limited to the North Island. The waters are far away from major shipping lanes. The government has many regulations in place that help to protect the environment, prevent pollution and ensure that the fish populations are sustainable.

The best companies use a process called molecular distillation to remove all the impurities and concentrate the oil for more omega 3 content. Although the Hoki from New Zealand is one of the few fish oils in the world that is totally pure and not distilled, it is important for the others to have undergone this process or you may unwittingly ingest the harmful toxins.

A study conducted in New Zealand concluded that a supplement containing the natural oil of the hoki fish had two and a half times the anti-inflammatory activity of normal fish oil. I’ll tell you more about that brand in a moment.

Freshness

Freshness is important, because rancid oils contain free radicals. They are already oxidized, which means they are more likely to clog your arteries.

When supplements cause repeats or excessive burping, it is because they are rancid. Many manufacturers add an artificial flavoring to cover up the smell and taste of rancid oils.

The best manufacturers offer a money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied for any reason, you can return the unused portion for a full refund. The guarantee covers fishy tasting burps.

Why Fish Oil is the Best Source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Only fish oil contains significant amounts of DHA and EPA. Flax seed and other vegan sources contain only ALA, alpha linolenic acid.

ALA is the shortest of the long-chained fatty acids. The body may be able to convert ALA to EPA and then to DHA, but the process is very inefficient.

Researchers have shown that ALA supplementation does not increase blood levels of DHA, at all.

Being the longest of the long-chained fatty acids, DHA can easily be down converted into EPA or ALA if the body has a need for them. If you want the best in terms of effectiveness, you want a brand that is rich in DHA. Most supplements are mostly EPA.

Complete Range of Omega 3 Oils

It is now possible to get Premium and Ultra fish oils too.

The best premium oils contain added antioxidants like lycopene and astaxanthin to reverse the effects of skin aging and sun damaged skin (photo-aging). These can also help to fade age spots.

Ultra oils contain added Ubiquinol (a type of Coenzyme Q10) and these help to boost and strengthen your heart health and can significantly increase your energy levels too.

The Most Effective Fish Oil Supplements

If you choose the most effective fish oil supplement, you will notice a difference. It may take a while, particularly if you are not currently taking a supplement or you have spent years suffering from a lack of DHA in your diet. But you will notice a difference.

The immediate benefits you may notice include:

•    Improved joint function–less pain, more flexibility, because of the anti-inflammatory activity

•    Better vision–60% of the fatty acids in the retina are DHA

•    Improved ability to concentrate–due to the benefits to the brain (some people also notice more vivid dreams when the DHA content of the supplement is high)

•    Better mood–also due to the benefits to the brain

•    Weight loss–several studies have shown that supplementation is beneficial for people who need to lose weight. The benefit is believed to be due to decreased appetite.

You may not notice the long term benefits for many years. Although omega 3 DHA fish oil is not the only beneficial anti-aging supplement, it is one of the most important.
