The gray matter of the brain is mostly fat. Most of the fatty acids in the brain are DHAs or Docosahexaenoic acids. DHA is the longest of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids.
DHA is needed to build new brain cells. When brain cells become damaged, they must be replaced. When new things are learned or new memories are created, new pathways are formed and new cells are built to house the memories. DHA is needed for that construction.
EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid is another of the long-chained omega 3 fatty acids. Without EPA, the brain does not function properly.
• Low blood levels of EPA and DHA are associated with an increased risk of depression and suicidal behavior
